I was at the dog park and a woman had two beautiful young retrievers. Unbelievably shining coats. I asked her how old the dogs were and one was two and the other was ten but looked two. And that prior to changing their diet the dog was sickly and had terrible skin issues. Trust me, you would not believe it, this dog was vital and playful and i could tell she FELT WELL. This is thirteen month old Scooby Doo, who until this morning has lived with our breeder Heather in Fallbrook. He is Rocco's littermate, one of eight. He is a champion in several dog shows. Today, he has retired and come to live with us forever and ever. We're all really excited. Here you see that though beautiful he is not exactly a runway model.

One thing: most likely not going to call him Scooby Doo. Gonna ease him out of it.

They love each other already. Lana included.

our Basset rescue organization is overwhelmed with dogs and Dodson and I have volunteered to foster a beautiful little one or two year old girl named Cinch who has been overbred and poorly nourished. Oh, and she's had most of her litter yanked away from her, only two girls remain. Six weeks old. fed kibbles and bits, which is cancer in a bag. living in squalor with dead rattlesnakes laying around. and no, I am not describing a staff meeting at the William Morris agency.

Bongo and Sugar's house is going to be these three dogs home for the next month to two months. They have been fed (goat's milk and Candidae kibble) and fed purified water. Everyone is resting peacefully in the guest room, which will be theirs. Within a coupla days they'll be in great shape.

Big Sur was much prettier and much more fun this year than last. The weather was much cooler and made for a nicer, cooler and bug-free environment. the dogs had an awful lot of fun and rocco has a million more spots than he did before he left LA.

today would be their ninth birthday. we celebrated this mornng by taking Rocco and Lana to the park. This picture was taken in September of 1998, note how beautiful Sugar's face was as a baby. The hardest part about her being gone is that now every bit of food can go unguarded for the first time in nine years. Eighth born of a litter of eight. The runt of the litter, she luxuriated in being worshipped, pampered, and slavishly adored by her brother Bongo, the first born. Equally put on a pedestal by her two hopelessly smitten Dads and her niece Lanaynez. Far too briefly the enchanted of Rickey Cugat. Newly fondly felt for by Roccheaux Raoul. Loved boundlessly by her Grandma and her Nana. Sugar and Bongo came to live with me on my fortieth birthday when they were seven weeks old. Until his passing a year ago they never spent a moment apart, ever. She lived her life to its fullest by bossing everyone around and knowing exactly what that was on top of the counter or in your purse. Perhaps a little nearsighted or maybe she really was just ignoring you. Ate an entire red velvet cake with chocolate frosting and the enormous glass platter it was on when she was five (possible cause of congestive heart failure, complications from which she passed). Mentioned that the cake and the platter were delicious, thank you very much. Incredibly interested in what your napkin tasted like. And where the best place to nap at which time of day. Which Papa to sleep next to for the first part of the evening. Average kisser (sorry, somebody has to be). Except for a couple of times when she was young she never spent a night away from her Papas nor her brother or niece. We are all very sad (except for Bongo who I believe is exultant, he has fifteen months of eyeboogers to clean up). If there is a heaven, seriously, the first person I see better be Bongo but Sugar Joan better be right there with him. Bongo, make this effortless for your sister. Or she will kick your ass if you don't so you might as well. Safe passage my first daughter, my angel. I will love and honor you forever and cannot wait to be reunited with you.
